Mia’s Cantina Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Too expensive and not authentic (no corn tortillas!). Free chips were very greasy although the salsa was good. Place was pretty empty at 7:45PM on a Saturday night. The waitress was very nice, attentive. We had the fresh guac but felt it was under seasoned, needed more lime and salt. We asked for medium but there was absolutely no heat in it. I had chicken quesadillas as my main and it was pretty good. My hubby had the tiger shrimp... 8 shrimp with a bowl of rice, and a side of zucchini/corn for $18. The shrimps ended up being too spicy for him; I tried one shrimp and felt it had a bitter/chemical aftertaste. Not sure what that's about. I did get a strawberry mojito which was delicious! However upon receiving our check we saw we had been charged an extra dollar for the strawberry flavor which was not stated at all in the menu. A $1 upcharge is one of those things that makes you feel ridiculous asking about it cuz it's only a dollar but then leaves you feeling cheated. My hubby liked this place cuz he thinks it's cleaner than a more authentic mexican restaurant, but we won't be returning if I can help it!

Although my friends and I had a great time being together, I would have to say that Mia's Cantina did not meet expectations. Atmosphere was minimal - yellow painted walls with some pseudo-Mexican tchotchkes and exposed heating vents. Margaritias (of which I am fussy) were mediocre, at best - not worthy of a specialty restaurant. We had heard raves about the fish tacos - sadly, they were out of them. Two of our five orders were wrong -- enchiladas - how hard is that? - they fixed one (sent back, and waited for replacement - the other we just accepted - was never offered compensation), and rice and beans again were mediocre (canned?) . Enchiladas were good, but not spectacular. All in all, would not recommend - Javiers in Arlington Heights is much better, for about the same price.

Great little Mexican restaurant. Fresh everything! Staff is very attentive. Will be going back often and bringing friends.

We tried Mia's last weekend, and loved it. The Carne Asada was the best I have ever had! Warm chips and salsa were delicious. The service was great. We will definitely be back!!!! -Amy (Des Plaines)

The sopes I ordered were delicious. My daughter had chicken tacos that were excellent. I'm definitely going back to try some other items on the menu. We went around 4:00 on a weeknight and there was no crowd.

Happened onto this place at the end of the block by accident. Was attracted by the vibrant colors and clean lines. My dining partner requires non-gluten, so she got the tamales, which she really liked. I had the ceviche de camaron (shrimp cocktail, basically) that was very fresh and excellent. Our service was good, too. I thought the prices were moderate. Full tequila menu is impressive, but we did not partake that evening. BTW nice restroom. I will go there again to have my husband try the mole.

A great little place. The food is delicious, with the feel of homemade recipes combined with contemporary dishes and great ingredients. The service is prompt and friendly. The fish tacos were fantastic. The margarita bar also makes it a great place to stop for a drink. Kind of a jewel hidden in Mt. Prospect.

Good looked good but we never got seated. There were 4 open tables that were reserved for people that never showed up, and walk-ins seated immediately if they complain enough even though we waited 45 min before them. I was excited to try this place but I don't think I ever will as long as people can reserve tables and show up whenever they feel like it.

I love that this place is so close to us. I've been there twice now. Fresh tasting chips and salsa. Last time, I had their veggie tacos, which were really good. Good drinks as well. We'll definitely be back.

Chips and salsa to die for I mean it! Had to get a order to take home after we stuffed ourselves on Apps and Dinner which were so Yummy! The reason I'm only giving it 4 stars is that the service was pretty slow only 1 server no bartender and no bus boy on a Wednesday night around 6:00 She was getting pretty slammed , she was a great waitress but is was so hard for her to be attentive to all the tables at one time.Poor girl said she had called the owners for some help they finally arrived but why was she the only one there at 6:00 Diner where was the owners to help her there even was a table that walked out. Again where were the owners or managers????? We will definitely go back for more but hopefully The Owners will be at their Restaurant

Overall, I liked it. The food was good, the tequila selection was excellent. The service was acceptable although a bit slower than I like. I had polle al mole and loved it, my wife had fish tacos and was less pleased. Her meal was just OK mainly due to the sauce (it was very heavy and was probably just mayo plus seasoning).

A very pleasant surprise in Mount Prospect!! I had their Al Pastor tacos...with the pineapple salsa, what a fabulous combo! Chips, salsa, and guac were excellent. Good Margaritas.....they would have gotten 5 stars if it weren't for the service...which was mediocre. But it was very busy when I went on a Friday night. Good Eats....definitely check them out.

This neighborhood gem is dee-vine! The food is so fresh and so tasty. I love supporting local business owners. Great bar selection and friendly staff. Thanks for all the good eats.

A great new addition to downtown My Prospect. Interesting menu with wonderful results. We ate outside which was nice. Server seemed a bit distracted and nobody ever asked how we were doing. I was a little surprised the manager never came around, especially since it's a new place. But, overall this is a great place to come for a wonderful twist on Mexican food, and we'll be back. The service is a work in progress.

WOW. This place is great. So many times you get caught up in your favorite restaurants that you overlook new, great places. Quality not quantity. The marguerites are the best I have had anywhere. I had the pork tacos and they are good enough that even though I am very full, (you get three) I can't wait to have them again. My husband had the beef enchiladas with verde sauce and also thought it was very tasty. Everything has a lot of flavors, not just a lot of cheese like you get so many places. Only complaint is that because it is small with lots of hard surfaces when they turn on the blender behind the bar it is very loud. No real way to correct this and it is a very minor issue. Service was spot on and prices are very much in line, two drinks, two dinners and my husband's fried ice cream for dessert was only $49. We will return.

Just moved into the area and was looking for a good Mexican restaurant close by. Food was good I highly recommend the Al Pastor tacos, a little different then traditional al pastor tacos but delicious. They had other specials that looked good as well but I could always judge a good Mexican restaurant and a bad one just by the tacos they serve. They also have some interesting drinks here too.

Love this place. Food is really good - chips and salsa are fresh and awesome. Also love the the facility. Clean and upscale. You really can't go wrong here.

Went for dinner with 5 people for early Saturday dinner. I have a rule about dining out for Mexican food: GOOD MARGARITAS + GOOD SALSA = GOOD FOOD, That was NOT the case at this place! Honestly if you can't make either of those things good do you really need to waste your time for dinner? I usually leave and don't order anything else because there is no point but I was not able to do that this time because of the group. The house Margarita was Awful so I sent it back and tried the House Sangria and that was Worse! Both were a mix from a bottle! All 3 Salsas were weird too... very strange flavors. Have you ever had a sweet salsa?? I have not always savory or spicy. I have been to Mexico numerous times and I have never had food like this..... anywhere! I know what good Mexican Food is and this place is not good! If you want Fantastic Mexican food go to Bien Trucha in Geneva, IL. They make Everything GOOD! I had the Mexican salad with grilled chicken.... they forgot the chicken! It was so bland I almost didn't notice anyway and the oiliest Balsamic Vinaigrette I have ever had... also very weird. My boyfriend got the steak quesadillas they were cooked fine but also had a very strange fake smokey flavor, almost like liquid smoke??? We happened to be in the area for a function is the only reason we went here & we will NEVER go back! If we get that way again we would try Los Compadres heard it is very good, even from Steve Dahl!

Great place for a date! Been here several times and have yet to have a bad experience. Food is outstanding and the tequila selection is extensive. Love the fish tacos and the enchiladas!

I tried Mia's this summer with my dad and we had a great meal. I asked my husband to join me the next time and he raved about it. It is nice to have a great Mexican restaurant in Mount Prospect and support local businesses. I've had the pork tacos and they are wonderful, especially with the grilled pineapple. My husband had the fish tacos and they too, are delicious! The chips and salsa are aplenty.... and just the right amount of spice. The margaritas are actually pretty strong and worth the $! I would recommend Mia's to anyone. The one downfall is the service is pretty slow. Then again, I've only been in on weeknights and they usually have 1-2 people working. This is understandable since they just opened and are trying to see if they'll be successful before bringing on more staff. Overall, this is a great restaurant and I'm happy to see something this good in Mount Prospect. Hopefully they stick around, unlike most MP restaurants!

Just finished dinner at Mia's Cantina Mexican Bar & Grill - Excellent. Chips and Salsa are the best around, would go back just for them. Had the fajitas - steak was very tender - yum. Can't wait to come back.

Went for lunch this past Saturday. There was only one waiter and he was as slow as molasses. Ordered the carne asada tacos and they were tasty but the 3 tacos were puny. The sides of rice and beans were small as well. Definitely not worth the $13 price. They should be prices at 8 dollars at the most. My wife chicken fajitas that were tasty but once again, the portion was lackluster. We will not be back

My girlfriend and I actually visited this place today and it was good. The mole enchiladas were definitely on point and my Choriqueso was the best I'd ever had. The drinks were good to...my lady ordered a Michelada which she claimed was really good as well. Overall I had a really good experience.

This place is a disaster. A group of 4 and we waited over one hour for our food while other tables were served in a timely manner, and there were no special orders that would hold it up. I specifically asked for no dairy products, no cheese no sour cream on my tacos and yet my tacos were covered in shredded cheese. Our table was never cleared until dessert came out and I had started piling appetizer plates and dishes and dinner plates at the corner of our table. I will never come back here. The experience was terrible.

Tried this place for the first time with the hubs. Restaurant's decor was very inviting with Mexican music playing in the background and not overpoweringly loud. I ordered the frozen mango margarita and that is spot on. For dinner, the hubs ordered a trio of tacos - one carne asada and two pork al pastor. It was carne asada dinner for me. The Al Pastor taco was delicious but everything stops there. My skirt steak was tough and dry with very little flavor. The dinner did not come with any rice nor tortilla. I had to ask for tortilla and order a side of rice. The rice came out warm not hot and it was tough and once again with no flavor. It tasted like something that came out of the box. The black beans was refried and came out warm not hot and very little flavor. Giving this two stars for the ambiance, drink and al pastor. The place is pricey for the quality of food that is served.

I'm not a fan of negative posts. This place was recommended by two completely different people. They have a tequila bar, the assortment is impressive. We ordered the ribeye special, carne asada and another entree that could've been carne asada. The food was a bit over seasoned. I couldn't get through it. The margarita wasn't my favorite, it was ok . I actually gave it up to my lunch date. The place didn't smell clean. They may just have mopped and it smelled like a smelly mop. We should've ate outside. They do have a nice outside area. If I was traveling by metra and had a friend to meet me,I would be back to try a different cocktail or margarita. Great plantains - really good and not flattened out. Perfectly cooked.

I have never been a fan of Mexican food. It happened to be too spicy for me and has way more cilantro than I can tolerate; however, (behold) I went to two Mexican restaurants in 3 days (which is a record in the KK book). I am now a little bit better with spicy food. But i still cant stand cilantro. Anyway, I loved both of them. I am starting to wonder what other possibilies there are out there that I am missing out because I am a stubborn weirdo. My friend suggested Mia's Cantina. I pass this place all the time when I go to Sam's place (one of my faves in MP). Its practically a block away and I was oblivious to this gem. The place isn't really big but it has a prefect atmosphere for a date or a fun lunch with friends. We sat at the bar and the bartender greeted us right away. My phone was dying and he was nice enough to charge it while I was on the bar. That made it possible for me to be able to use my phone and take these really bad pics (forgive me for there was no flash due to the lack of battery). The moment you sat down they serve you chips and salsa. I loved the salsa. It wasn't very spicy but it had enough kick to make you want more. We weren't very hungry so I got the ceviche and my friend got the azteca soupa. Both were amazing. Sharing is caring right? Well we traded our foods to try them out. I want to go back and try their fajitas and tacos. Now the best part about this place. Their margaritas! Holly amazing margaritas!!! I had the guava one. It was so good I kept drinking and got brain freeze. Minor setback, its ok. We each had two. Yickes! This place is great. What a great find!

Pass on this place. Sangria was sour, sent it back. Chips were greasy and bland. Too much cilantro in salsa. Took 40 minutes to get food after placing order. Pork marinade reminiscent of Tikka. Refried black beans only. Rice like "Uncle Ben's". Really not a very special restaurant. Nice corner with outdoor seating, could be a fun place to drink. Not very special service rounds out this mediocre place. Pass.

Service, food, value and atmosphere were outstanding. Our server (young hispanic male) was the best server I have ever had. FYI: He was all alone and did an amazing job. Very attentive and thoughtful. More restaurants need servers like him. We had the micheladas, ceviche de camarones, choriqueso pablanos rajas and sopa azteca. All delicious and prepared fresh. Amazing portions and an abundance of free fresh tortilla chips and salsa, so much so that we didn't need to order an entrée. The ceviche de camarones was overflowing with succulent shrimp. Now that's what I'm taking about! We loved the outdoor seating minus the annoying skateboarders. It's a great place to go on a date night, ladies night, or just hang out with friends and family. Cannot wait to come back and try their cocktails and entrées.

  • Safa K.

Honestly this has got to be the most mediocre Mexican food I've ever had. Not to mention the absolutely terrible service. It seems like they're always so understaffed.

  • Hillary A.

Margaritas were on point--they tasted like they were made from fresh ingredients, not the mix that can sometimes be too sickeningly sweet. These margaritas were the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. I had the carne asada tacos, also delicious and full of flavor. If you like the very thin and crispy chips that crumble easily, then you'll like theirs. They were a bit greasy but tasted okay with the salsa which was really good. The guacamole was also really good and chunky, not the kind that looks like green whipped cream. The waiter was pleasant and attentive. Unlike other places in the area, I liked that the tables were not crowded closely together so I did not have to listen to strangers' conversations all night. I would definitely recommend.

I heard good things about this Mexican restaurant, so i drove over to look at the menu and place an order at 9pm. I am truly disappointed, as I have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant around here! When I took a menu to look at, I was promptly told that they were closed (when people were sitting inside with the TV on!) I asked about their listing on yelp saying they were open til 11pm during the week, and was told that was correct, that he decided to close because it's been slow. I commented that I had driven all the way there and received only a shoulder shrug, no care at all. I let this person know simply I would not be back again. I had something like "that's ok" muttered under his breath at me. I couldn't completely hear what was said, but it was not a business appropriate response, on top of closing 2 hours early. Very disappointed, but feel others need to know that they can't count on this restaurant being open when it says it will be. If a restaurant wants to close at 9 instead of 11, great. Just make sure it says you close at 9, rather than rudely surprising people when you decide to close 2 full hours early.

  • Tony S.

I have given Mia many raving reviews but this time very disappointing , the Ceviche was bland and tasteless and looked more like bruschetta. Awful. The magi magi tacos were a child portion with a spoonful of rice. I'll probably stop at McDonalds after words oh yeah the Tacos were $16.00

    (2)
  • Travis C.

I enjoyed everything they served me. The mojito was perfect. The skirt steak tacos had a great house made Morita sauce that made my mouth water. The service here was on point! I'll definitely be back to try more of their entrees.

Worth trying, but there are so many other Mexican places nearby that are more authentic and it won't cost you $10 or more per plate. Try the Mexican restaurants in the strip mall joints in Des Plaines, super authentic and won't break the bank. Food here is good, but not for the price. It's nice they have a full bar and some outdoor seating.

    (2)
  • Michele B.

The service was wonderful. We were seated immediately and served warm, fresh tortilla chips and homemade salsa. They make wonderful drinks as well. I had a raspberry mojito and my daughter had a mango margarita. I had the fish tacos. the fish was crispy and the chipolte mayo and red slaw on top made even better. The enchiladas were outstanding as well. The restrooms were immaculate and the whole restaurant was clean and inviting. This is a definite "south of the border" return.

Cheerful, cheerful, friendly, friendly. This is a true cantina. Indoor setting has a bar with an adjoining dining room, dark walls and Mexican flavored decor. As you would expect, a really nice drinks menu with a wide selection of tequila including several flights--always the best way to learn about various flavors. Chips and salsa are freshly made and readily replenished. We had enchiladas, the chicken was the standout--moist and flavorful. Cheese has lots of cheeses. Beans and rice nothing to write home about. They have outdoor seating somewhat awkwardly crammed onto the sidewalk, but this is a pretty quiet street so it's a fine place to sit. There is plentiful parking up and down the street (can you parallel park?). This location is right by the train station and within easy walking distance of anything in downtown Mount Prospect. (If you are going to pub crawl MP-add it to the list, it's on the sane side if the tracks as Mrs. P.). The found was really good, but what will bring be back was the outstanding service. Muchas gracias, amigos!

Love the tortilla chips here. Had tacos carne asada and the meet was good. I like that you can feel like in Mexico there. Always Mexican music, good service.

  • Avinash K.

Really good service and food was super heavy. Friendly staff - started off with traditional bowl of nachos and salsa, which was fresh. I got the fish tacos - which was good. My friend got a veggie burrito - which had some habanero (which is home made), which made it really spicy. I think one of the few mexican places that I enjoyed the degree of spiciness and it exceeded my expectations (in terms of spice level).

If you can believe it, the french fries in my son's kid's meal were every bit as good as In N Out Burger in Los Angeles! The lemonade blew us away. The salsa verde and chips were the best any of us have ever experienced. The quality of the burrito and enchilada was superb. We were not impressed with the ranchero sauce, which tasted like weak marinara.

By far the best authentic Mexican food I have ever tasted! I'm so glad that this gem is in Mount Prospect!!!!

  • Bina P.

Tortilla chips were freshly fried and crunchy. Salsa had a nice kick! Waiter was accommodating and friendly! I had a mix of pomegranate & pineapple margarita! All enchiladas were good. Mia's enchilada's was an interesting with carrots & potatoes. Carrots were a unique touch. The potatoes weren't cooked thoroughly. The restroom was inviting and clean. It was a small but intimate setting. It's conveniently located by the train station.

Great food. Crowded wait area. The boys ordered the special carne oilxoguena and loved it! The chips and salsa are great. I ordered steak and chicken fajitas. Steak was good but chicken was plain and it needed more vegetables. Last time we were here we ordered the special shrimp tacos and they were amazing. Waiter was very friendly. Would definitely come back. I hear the margaritas are awesome but was driving so couldn't have them. Fun atmosphere.

It was so good the first time I couldn't wait to return. The second time was just as great! The food and drinks are great (especially the enchiladas and margaritas). I love this place.

  • Sylvia R.

We waited over an hour WITH reservations for Over priced bland food! We ordered the tamales, they were hard and tasteless. I ordered the steak and chicken fajitas. The chicken had no flavor! My husband did say the steak was delicious, but overpriced. Drinks were good as well. Ceviche was ok, but I've had better. It seems this restaurant tones down its spice for its clientele which is very sad for Latin people who want real flavorful Mexican food. Won't be going back

Peak family time (6:30 p.m.) with kids taking seats up at the bar. Small tight area - can't blame them - there is no other place to go. People learning of the wait and leaving left and right. I learned a lesson to make a reservation next time if there is a next time. Female greeter thanks the family with kids for being patient but with my group that waited 45 mins - nothing. Older server seemed overwhelmed. Wished we had the younger guy - he was working it! Had to ask for the complimentary chips. When leaving at around 8:15 pm - there was still a party that had been sitting by the front window when we first arrived - table cleared and just taking up space in a super small restaurant - absolute restaurant killers. Food was just ok. Will take a lot to reconsider going there again.

I placed and order for carry out and was told it would be 15 mins but turned out to be more closer to 30mins. Which is I was willing to over look. I ordered the carne asada diner and some tacos and chip & salsa....just a bit pricey. Overall the food tastes decent. My only complaint is... they for got my "tortillas". If they didn't forget my tortillas I would have given them a 4 star but my diner was not the same. It's like giving me the ham without the burger, giving me the ice without the cream, it's like ying without the yang, giving me the orange without the chicken, the milk without the white. To sum it up I did not enjoy my meal, maybe I'll go back maybe not.

Very cute place. Great food and good atmosphere. I love the fish tacos, but I usually ask for them to be grilled. Most people I know love the pork pastor tacos.

I love Mia's we walk here all summer long and probably come here 4-5 times a month. Everything I've had here is great, it is a place that I"m not afraid to try something new or one of their amazing specials. I've brought family here and friends here, great place to gather. I have 2 small children and they both love to eat here and ask to come to Mia's! Best Mexican in Mount Prospect!

  • Sean N.

My girlfriend and I have become frequent visitors to this restaurant because of how good the food and service is. We have never been disappointed in any respect at Mia's. We are big fans of the chose your meat tacos and of course the warm chips they keep bringing out. Never had an issue with waiting for a table or our food. Would recommend to anyone who is remotely interested in Mexican food. We will be coming back.

  • Kalyn H.

You know that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you have a perfect dining experience where nothing was 'off?' EVERY time you go there? You'll get it here! I probably eat here monthly now, we love it! Don't go here if you're in a rush...but it's great for a date with margaritas (which are quite pricey). I highly recommend the fish tacos, mahi mahi ceviche, chicken tortilla soup, tiger shrimp (back page, sauce has a kick to it and is creamy and amazing!), and the margarita that's rimmed with chili powder. I love the way the chef plates too, it's always so modern and colorful!

Really good! Tacos were awesome with the right amount of filling and toppings. Fresh and delicious. The decor was also very cute. Highly recommended.

  • Hilary O.

The food here is kind of pricey, especially since their food is just "eh". The strawberry margarita was delicious though. My mom doesn't usually like margaritas, but I caught her taking a couple sips when she thought I wasn't paying attention! I'm thinking of going back to do a tequila tasting, too. Glad the drinks came out well, I was just expecting more out of the food based on the reviews. Also, be warned...this place is TINY! I don't know if they take reservations, but if you plan on going at a peak time, you might want to make a reservation, go early, or go later.

  • Joyce K.

The family was up for a new Mexican food restaurant and came across Mia's. The atmosphere was trendy but space was a little tight. I don't know how they are when it gets crowded. Service was good, especially since one guy was the greeter, waiter, server and bartender. I had a pomegranate margarita and thought it needed a little tequilla kicker. Food was very good. All four members had leftovers. All in all this was a nice surprise all around. Nice suburban location. If you live near or far you must try this hidden treasure.

I have been to Mia's Cantina for lunch with a few coworkers a couple of times. It's always quiet when we go, I imagine it's more popular for happy hour and dinner. The restaurant is clean, brightly-decorated and comfortable. I ordered the pork pastor tacos the first visit, and the steak tacos my second time. The pastor tacos were delicious, and were served with some grilled pineapple. Sweet and a little spicy. The steak tacos were also tasty, but didn't stand out the same way. The rice and beans were standard for a Mexican restaurant, not my favorite part of the meal, but delicious nonetheless. I also got a side of the mole sauce, which was awesome! Service was good, the waiter was fast about refilling our water, drinks and chips/salsa. I'd love to come back and try dinner here.

  • Brooke A.

Solid chips and salsa. Huge portions. Great flavor. 5 stars. "but you only gave it 4 stars!?! " Although the food was really good, we had two problems. First, this joint is the loudest place I have ever been to. Friday night, it is apparently the place to be if you want to scream across the table at your nearest and dearest. Second, the service was slow. When I asked, " did they forget about us?" twice, I can't give high marks. I still tipped well, because I'm a baller, but that's neither here nor there.

Food was great, drinks were great but service was veryyy slow. Our waiter was ok, except he took 30 minutes to take care of our bill.

This place is amazing! The tortilla chips you start our with are fresh as can be and are so good! Their strawberry mojito was by far the best mojito I've ever had!! We has the pork tacos and the steak fajitas. Sooo good! Service was good and are very friendly! Love this place!!

We LOVE Mia's. Their (warm!!) chips and salsa that they serve as an appetizer is absolutely delicious.. They are so freshly made and yummy.. it's hard not to want to fill up on them, but you have to save room for the other deliciousness, of course! Our friends ordered the tampiquena and were generous to let us try.. oh my word! I've never had skirt steak so melt-in-your-mouth tender or with such excellent flavor! We all kept saying their black beans were the best we've ever had, and our friends spent some time living in Guatemala, so they know their black beans! I got the taco salad-- loved the fresh ingredients and oh-so-tasty edible bowl. My husband stuck with the tacos because even though he often gets them when we stop by their booth at the Mt. Prospect every Sunday, he can't get enough! We don't usually order drinks when we go out to restaurants because we're just too cheap, but you can't pass them up at Mia's! The owner has extensive mixology experience, and it shows. We ordered frozen strawberry margs, while our friends stuck with the classic Mia's. So. Good. The service at Mia's is also unbelievable. Our waiter was smiley, friendly and attentive.. but we felt he wasn't overly intrusive at all, checking at us from afar, not interrupting conversation. He always kept our waters filled and asked us how we were enjoying anything. Thanks, Ruben! The restaurant is small but very enjoyable. Even their bathrooms are nice! The owner's passion to create a good quality Mexican restaurant shows in the food, service, décor, everything! We can't get enough of Mia's! So glad this place is MP!

I dined here with a +1 last night around 7:30. We ordered the guacamole + chips ($8) for our app. He ordered the Carne Asada ($17) and I had the Al Pastor Tacos ($13) and a diet ($2). We had a $25 Restaurant.com gift certificate in tow. The guac was plentiful but just "alright"; nothing to write home about. (The +1 likened it to Chipotle's.) The Carne Asada was alright, but basically a slab of steak + 3 plantains + some mushy black beans on the side. My Al Pastor Tacos were small. I had an even smaller portion of mushy black beans in a 1.5" cube dish. Overall it didn't have much flavor, even with the sauce on the side + the guac I added from our guac + chips appetizer. My +1 and I agreed that food would have probably been a "solid 2.5 stars." The restaurant ambiance was ok - lots of colorful paint and some cultural chatskis, dark wood floors, and "trendy" square white plates, "shattered glass"-type glasses...everything that screams "we're a hip upscale Mexican restaurant." The restrooms were clean, but the floors in the dining room were NOT. There were lemon quarters on the floor by my chair from the previous diners, and there were a LOT of visible food bits on the floor around empty tables next to us. Gross. Our total came to $43 and some change. They receipt directly deducted the $25 Restaurant.com gc (without adding 18% gratuity prior), which would have been $18. However, our total said $28. Huh?? We were confused. How on earth was this being calculated? 18% gratuity on $43 is $7.75. Our total should have been $50.75, THEN - $25, for a total of $25.74. I'm not sure if our server was TRYING to get a $10 (24% gratuity) tip, or if it was an innocent mistake. My +1 went back up to ask about the bill, and the server voided it and re-rang it. Again, he didn't add in the 18% gratuity, so we added the $7.75 ourselves. In all, it wasn't a place I'd go back to. I felt it was overpriced for the portions, and basic cleanliness (sweeping the floor...??) wasn't there.

Went for lunch...very disappointing. I was the first person to show up for lunch and had to stand and wait for a table for about 5 minutes til someone could seat me. Ordered enchiladas with mole sauce and just didn't care for the flavor, had an oddly sweet taste. Served with a bland helping of black beans and rice. Portion size was very small for the price. Got the bill and had been charged an extra $1 for enchiladas suizas which I didn't order, but wasn't going to haggle over a buck because the service was slow...by then one other table was filled but service remained slow. My biggest argument with this place is the portion size. I usually go to Mexico Uno in Palatine and the same lunch would have cost me $5, but here it was double and their mole sauce is fabulous. Like supporting local business but I won't be back.

This is not your run of the mill suburban tqquaria, it is a full fledged Mexican restaurant. Not a traditional one either so don't expect the normal enchilllada swimming in a sea of Chihuahua cheese. The owner worked for Rick Bayless for years before coming out here to open this place, and you can tell by the elclectic selection of ingreadiants and combinations. Everything is very fresh and the emphasis is on quality over quantity. The menu changes seasonally and on my last vist I had the pork Carnitas tacos...they kicked ass! Their Mole sauce is also one of my favorites. The bar is well stocked, but beer selection is a little thin, though all the best Mexican brands are there. The margaritas are big and strong. Service is pretty good. The wait staff are lovable but a bit flaky. We go here often 'cuz it is fun and close to home. Prices are on the high side, but reasonable for this caliber dinning experience.

You know a restaurant must be good when there's a crowd and tonight was no exception! While we only sampled the margaritas and chips/salsa which were by far the best I have had in a long time, the service and ambience was also superb! We will definitely be back for the main course!

Easy parking, good red wine Sangria and mole make this a good place to go. Inexpensive margaritas make it better. If you go when it is crowded be prepared for very loud venue. No joke, the acoustics make this one of the loudest places I've been. Offsetting the noise is a very friendly staff . If you can sit outside I'd recommend it.

You ever want to keep a place all to yourself and not share it with ANYONE? That's how I feel about Mia's! This place has great food and a wonderful ambience. I am so impressed with what they have done with the space. The wait staff is very accommodating and friendly, and the food is remarkable. My favorite is the spicy shrimp! The margaritas are so flavorful! I can't say enough about this restaurant. And after all these great reviews, I hope the owners are able to expand the restaurant in the near future so we can all get in without a long wait!!

Solid 4 stars. If I had to break it down, drinks and service (Fernando) were 5 stars. Ambience 3 stars because it was very loud on a Sat night. Food 4 stars.

Being Mexican, I definitely have a higher standard for Mexican fare. Mia's is solid Mexican cuisine. Nothing that will knock your socks off but a good choice in an area with slim pickings. More than your typical taco joint but like most other cuisine, better options in the city. I've been there 3x and service has always been great. Nice to see them have late hours in an area that seems to be asleep by 9 on the weekends. Great margarita options. Good job Mia's!

We ate at Mia's Cantina for the first time last night (they opened earlier this month). We couldn't have been more surprised and delighted! The restaurant has a lofty, city feel with big windows, exposed brick, and touches of contemporary and traditional mexican decor. We started with the home made margaritas which were outstanding (we set the bar pretty high since we like to make them at home!) My husband ordered the chicken and steak fajitas which were amazing and I had the carne asada which was hands-down the best I've had. Usually this dish can be a little tough/chewy, but not here. The skirt (hangar) steak served was super tender and well prepared. The service was a little slow, but understandably so -- since they just opened. We are happy to have a new restaurant of this caliber in Mount Prospect!!!

People aren't kidding when they say this place is tiny and loud. We went on a Thursday night and had to eat at the bar, which was fine because the bartender was very nice and attentive. The chips, THE CHIPS!!! They get five stars, no doubt. All the other food, including the tiny sides I got with my fajitas gets 3.5. All the waitstaff were very nice and attentive. I would order out from here again, the chips are that good.

Dinner on a Thursday night. + Ambiance. Cozy, colorful, dimmed lighting, Spanish music playing. + Food was delicious & flavorful. Yum! Yum! Yum! + Delicious and complementary nachos as soon as you sit down. These are freshly made nachos, not the one that you'd get from opening a bag that they got at a grocery store. + Very clean (the bathrooms, too!) + Friendly staff + Free street parking + Faces the Mt. Prospect Metra stop so very convenient to get to - It's a small restaurant. Maybe 15 tables? But no biggie. There were only 4 of us dining. Just a warning to those who want to bring 20 friends. You'd probably take over 2/3 of the the restaurant space. - Quite expensive for the poritions they provide - Very limited menu - Our waitress was a bit out of it. She didn't write down our orders but came back to the table to ask what we ordered again. No biggie. - Menu needs to be updated. One of our entrees was listed as "accompanied with carrots & patotoes". We asked for it when our dish was put on our table. Our waitress said they stopped doing that since not a lot of people liked it. We would've appreciated if this was mentioned when we ordered our food. Better yet, just cross out that information in the menu. It was a let down to be told part of our order was not going to be provided. Will go back if friends really want to go back to this place. The food was really delicious. However, because of price and a limited menu, not really rarin' to go back.

Mia's is the BEST mexican place around! The shrimp ceviche is to die for, and the chips and salsa are really good too. This place never disappoints. If you live near Mia's and have never gone there, GO!!!!!!!!!!!!! You won't regret it.

We headed over there on a Monday evening. Although they have tables set outside on the sidewalk and the weather was lovely, we decided to sit inside because we wanted to sample the ambiance and noise level so if we chose to return during the cooler months, we'd have an idea. The interior is well-done. Bright colors, warm hardwood floors and glass. Spotless. A sleek but small bar is near the back. Definately not like walking into Pepe's Tacos or a divey taqueria. It's a good "date" place, though not too dark or intimate. Although there was a TV on above the bar, it wasn't intrusive. We were the only ones there, having arrived about 5:15 or so. Granted, Monday is not a big dining out day of the week, but whatever--we were hungry. We were seated at our choice of tables. The waiter greeted us warmly and quickly brought us a heaping bowl of warm, freshly prepared tortilla chips and a small bowl of salsa. Really, really good. I love places that make their own tortilla chips. The salsa had just enough kick in it and was quite fresh tasting. Free, too. We ordered some drinks. The missus had a pineapple martini made with tequilia and I had a Mexican beer. The straightforward one page menu had a few other appetizers including soup, but we went straight to the entrees. I ordered the Tacos De Pescado, essentially a beer-battered fish taco. My wife had the Chilis Rellenos. About 10 minutes later, it was chow time. Mine: Three tacos served on flour tortillas and garnished with red cabbage and a creamy chipotle sauce. A cup of yellow rice mixed with carrots and peas. A colorful plate. The tortillas were tender, though I expected them to be corn tortillas, not flour. The fish was very crunchy and just a little tough--perhaps 30 seconds too long in the deep fryer. Not bad, though. The combination of soft tortilla/crispy fish/cool cabbage and creamy, spice sauce really worked well. Again, if they were made with corn tortillas, they would have been about perfect. One demerit: the side of yellow rice was mushy and flavorless. Wife: two chilis stuffed with with cheese and served with rice and black beans. Good. Tender chilis and mellow cheese, slightly spicy ranchero sauce. Black beans decent. Same deal with the rice. A big enough platter that she didn't finish them. The staff packed them up without drama. So, I'd call the review 3 1/2 stars for the main dishes, 5 for the salsa/chips and 4 for interior design. Although our service was fine, we were the only ones there the whole time (about 45 minutes)--it wasn't like we were taxing the staff with demands. The prices were reasonable--a decent value. Oh, one more thing--it's the only Mexican restaurant in downtown Mt. Prospect--and a pretty nice one, too. So I hope it survives. We will be back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
